Travelers are urged to avoid the M1 on the NSW Central Coast after a trailer crashed into parked vehicles before catching fire, causing traffic chaos and injuring two road workers.
Emergency services were called to the M1 at Kangy Angy just before 4:00 on Tuesday.
Both workers were seriously injured and rushed to hospital. One man is in serious condition, the other is stable.
The trailer caught fire, police said, but the driver escaped unharmed. He was taken to hospital for mandatory examination.
Southbound lanes on the M1 will remain closed at the Alison Road viaduct.
Two of the three northbound lanes are also closed.
Transport for NSW said drivers traveling south will be diverted at the Sparks Road exit.
Light vehicles can use the Hue Hue, Yarramalong and Old Maitland roads to rejoin the highway at Tuggerah.
Heavy vehicles should use Pacific Highway and Wyong Road instead, the department said.
“Drivers are also advised to allow sufficient additional travel time and to follow directions from traffic and emergency services in the area,” said Live Traffic NSW.
Some drivers who wanted to travel to Sydney from Newcastle have been forced to turn around.
