A Chinese citizen has been extradited to Queensland from New South Wales and will appear in court on Friday for murder and interfering with a corpse.
Police will allege in court that 26-year-old Yang Zhao murdered his roommate, 30-year-old Qiong Yan, sometime between October 2020 and May this year.
The body of an Asian woman was found wrapped in cloth in an “esky-sized” box on the balcony of a riverside apartment in Brisbane on Monday.
Although police have not yet officially identified the body, Ms Yan’s family in China confirmed to detectives that the jewelry found on the body belonged to their daughter, who was reported missing in Sydney three months ago.
Police found the body while executing a search warrant at the Parkside Court unit in Hamilton for information related to Ms Yan’s disappearance.
At the same time, NSW Police were at Mr Zhao’s Sydney home to seek more information about Ms Yan’s disappearance.
He was taken into police custody and transferred to Queensland on Thursday evening.
Police said on Tuesday the body was “so much decomposing” that detectives were initially unable to determine whether it was a man or a woman.
