Newcastle police have asked the public to look out for a “man with blood on his face” after another man was shot in an apartment on Thursday.
Police said several people appeared to have fled the apartment on Darby Street in the inner-city suburb of Cooks Hill after the deadly shooting, including a man and a woman of special interest to police.
“There were two people in particular, a man and a woman – descriptions vary, but around (the time of the shooting) they ran away,” said Wayne Humphrey, Newcastle City precinct commander.
“It was suggested that the man had blood on his face.”
He said members of the public should contact Crimestoppers “as soon as possible” if the pair were sighted.
Police and paramedics rushed to the apartment around 12:45 p.m. after members of the public called emergency services to say they heard gunshots.
A spokesman for the NSW Ambulance said a man discovered in the apartment was being treated for chest injuries.
But his life could not be saved.
Police confirmed he had died, but had not yet formally identified him.
A police statement said he died of a single gunshot wound, but NSW Ambulance said there were multiple wounds.
