Temporary evacuation of COVID-19 vaccine supersite results in some appointment cancellations

WINNIPEG – One of Winnipeg’s COVID-19 vaccination sites reopened after a potential gas leak resulted in evacuations.

Just before 2 p.m. Monday, Winnipeg police announced that the RBC Convention Center was being evacuated as a precaution and warned people to avoid the area. The website was released for reopening around 3:30 p.m.

At the time, Manitoba Hydro tweeted that it was investigating reports of a natural gas smell. Currently no leak has been found, it said.

The province said in a press release that the convention center would be closed for about two hours while Hydro and the Winnipeg paramedic are working on the problem. It urged people who had made appointments during that time not to come to the supersite.

It said anyone who has a COVID-19 vaccine appointment at 4:00 p.m. or later will be able to attend their appointment as planned.

The province said it will contact the people whose appointments were affected if they have their contact information to reschedule.

In a tweet, the Manitoba government said that around 1,300 appointments were affected by the temporary shutdown. If your appointment was affected, the province is asking people to reschedule the appointment by calling 1-844-626-8222 or booking an appointment online.

“Tomorrow morning, new appointment times will be added to the booking system so that those who need new appointments can rebook as quickly as possible,” said the province.
