A young mother and a man in his 70s have died following two separate drowning incidents on Wednesday night.
The woman, aged in her late 20s, is understood to have gotten into difficulty after entering the water at Loch Gowna, Co Cavan to rescue her child at about 8.30pm.
Gardaí believe she may have been trying to help her child return to the shore.
A large scale search involving the Coast Guard helicopter, several units of gardaí and Civil Defence took place before the woman’s body was recovered after 9pm.
Her body was taken to Navan General Hospital where a postmortem is expected to be carried out.
In a separate incident, a man in his 70s who was snorkelling at Spencer Harbour, Drunkeeran, Co Leitrim failed to return to the surface.
His body was recovered from the water a short time later by local emergency services.
Gardaí said the Coroner has been notified and the body of the man has been removed to the mortuary at Sligo University Hospital for a postmortem examination.
