Enugu police have confirmed a deadly attack on a checkpoint, killing scores of officers

Police in Enugu province have confirmed a deadly attack on officers at a checkpoint at the Obeagu-Amechi Society in Enugu Southern Local Government Area.

DAILY POST reports that the community is one of the surrounding areas of Enugu metro.

The bodies of at least four police officers were found after the attack; Some passersby, including a priest, said they were the victims of the fatal accident.

The number of casualties on the side of the unknown militants behind the incident is unknown.

A police patrol van was set on fire by gunmen during the attack.

Confirming the incident, State Police spokesman ASP Daniel Ndukwe said, “Today, 21/07/2021, in the evening, police officers were attacked by unknown assailants. Armed men identified at the Obeagu-Amechi checkpoint in Enugu South LGA and Amagunze checkpoint in Nkanu East LGA are still missing. ”

He said preliminary research was guaranteed to provide information on future developments.

Sources pointed out that the attack, which started at a busy point of Mmiri Ocha Amodu at 5.30pm on Wednesday, lasted until 7pm.

A source said four police officers, a priest and a neighborhood watchman were among those killed at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla Mortuary.

According to the source, “the armed struggle was so fierce that it came to Agbani Nkanu along the Obeagu-Amechi road, a few kilometers from the capital of Enugu province.

“As it went on, there was chaos and tension, people were running in different directions. “I think the police were caught all of a sudden.”

Another source said Amagunze police officers had set up an ambush for the fleeing militants, some of whom had been killed.
