As Nigeria celebrates 2021 Democracy Day on Saturday, National Leader of the All Progress Congress (APC) Chief Bola Tinubu called on Nigerians to be pro-democracy.
Tinubu sent a congratulatory message to the people on Friday.
According to the APC leader, good democratic governance offers solutions to national problems.
He said that despite the difficulties faced by Nigerians, they should be pro-democracy.
“Good governance offers the only reasonable solution to the problems facing Nigeria,” he said.
“Thus, we must be pro-democracy today. We have to stop for this tomorrow, “he said.
The former governor of Lagos also called on Nigerians to stand up to anything that could hinder democracy.
He called on them to oppose rebellion and violence, bigotry and hatred.
“We are fighting against those who make people ignorant and poor.
“We celebrate Democracy Day not only because we are moving away, but also to help fuel social incentives and progress, because we need to move forward and achieve greater things as a nation and a people,” Tinubu said.
The AXC leader called on Nigerians to remember the ‘stolen’ MKO Abiola, who won the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
He said: “Abiola remained steadfast and gave his life so that we could all enjoy the democratic victory he received.”
Tinubu said June 12 would not have been declared the nation’s Democracy Day without Abiola’s historic efforts and sacrifices.
He called on Nigerians to remember others who have sacrificed so much to bring democracy to Nigeria.
“We honor these people in the best way possible, not by reading their names, but by instilling in them the spirit and hope of democracy in our words and deeds.
“When we are better democrats, we are able to be Nigerians,” he said.
“I wish you all a meaningful and happy Democracy Day,” he said.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that Nigeria now celebrates Democracy Day on June 12 each year instead of May 29.
