• We arrested 19 traffic robbers, police say
Drivers and passengers on the Eco Bridge in Lagos State are saddened by the increase in attacks by armed bandits.
PUNCH Metro During the day, robbers broke into cars and commercial vehicles, depriving people of their valuables, and the police were nowhere to be found.
Our correspondents, who spoke to victims and witnesses, learned that residents now preferred longer routes to their homes due to the robbery.
A businesswoman, Opeyemi Adegbola, said she was robbed by hoodlums on a motorcycle at around 2.30pm on Wednesday.
He said, “Yesterday (Wednesday) I was taking my aunt Uber on my way from Lagos Island and there was traffic when I reached the Eco Bridge. It was raining, so the driver begged us to let him turn off the engine because we didn’t have much fuel, and we borrowed, so we had to break the windows a little.
“After a while, we didn’t know where these children came from; we just saw them get off the motorcycle, and one of them fired at our driver and shouted for him to knock the glass to the ground, threatening to hit him at the same time.
“At first it was like a movie for me; I did not know what happened. The other boy went to the right where my aunt was sitting and fell down and shouted to open the door. My aunt quietly told me to hide my phone, and I hid it in the car seat, pushed it down, and sat on it.
“Unaware of what was happening, the boy took off his shirt, took out a crooked classroom and broke the glass on my aunt’s face. We were injured. The boy picked up my aunt’s bag, asked her to take her jewelry, watch, and ring, came to me with her gun, and shouted that I should open the door; I opened the door and gave him my bag.
“He robbed my bag; My ATM cards were inside, but I didn’t see them. The other phone I used for business was in the bag, he took it and put it in his pocket, took the money into the bag and threw the bag into the floodwaters. ”
The victim explained that after being with the robbers, they switched to other vehicles to rob the passengers.
However, he noted that they were rescued by a man driving with some escorts on the other side of the road.
Adegbola said, “He (the person accompanying him) stopped and was shot in the air. At the sound of gunfire, the robbers took to the air. The escorts ran after them, but they could not catch them, because they did not know where they were going.
“We did not see any police on the bridge; When escorts opened fire in the air, some local boys began looking for robbers. After that, two police officers arrived on a motorcycle, and people shouted at them as they arrived after the robbers left.
“Those guys worked comfortably; there was no hurry at all. They went from one car to another; nothing prevented them, and he was ready to harm anyone who dared to confront him with the cutlass, so we had no choice but to hand everything over to them. I lost N20,000 and my phone to them. ”
Tolulope Adeleru-Balogun, a journalist who witnessed a robbery on the bridge on Monday, said the robbers attacked the passengers of a commercial bus at around 17.00.
He tells the story about him Twitter Support, Adeleru-Balogun, said there was no security agent on the bridge as the incident continued.
He tweeted, “I saw a bus robbed in front of me on the Eco Bridge in the afternoon. One had a gun and the other a new cutlass. Lagos people sit ducks on bridges around the city. My colleague was still trying to do something on his phone when a scammer standing by my window said, “Throw your phone away, they’re robbing you.” Less than two minutes later, they chased a white bus, slapped people, took off a pair of pants, and smashed one of the rear windows.
“The driver tried to maneuver, but everyone next to him and behind him tried to run away. They hit a round and another pulled out a weapon. Passengers, even passengers from the bus in the back, began to jump down. They also tried to follow a car.
“Lagosians share robberies here every day, but they continue to grow rapidly and accumulate steam. It is not safe to move around Lagos day and night; There is construction on the bridge that leads to the stadium that affects the Eco Bridge; There is a construction in Ogudu that affects the Third People’s Bridge. Who makes this decision in such a city? There were no police along the bridge until I reached Costaine’s exit, where I saw three officers. ”
Olufemi Anthony, another city resident who was almost robbed by robbers on Monday, said he saved his life by leaving his vehicle with the robbers throwing different weapons.
He said, “The robbery took place on Monday at around 5:00 p.m. The boys robbed the driver of the Toyota Camry in front of me, and when he was disappointed, the driver hit my car. I didn’t suffer from falling because those guys came with shotguns and cutlasses. The most surprising thing was that the van of a bank accompanying on the same Eco Bridge could not do anything and everyone had to save their lives. I left my vehicle and ran away. ”
A video posted on the Internet on Wednesday showed a woman allegedly attacked by robbers crying in her car while driving slowly.
The voice in the video said the woman was attacked by robbers while in traffic, adding that the robbers broke the side mirrors of several other cars.

“Since #EndSARS happened, the crime rate was high. The security guards left us technically. Some police said we could come to our senses after we said we didn’t want them. They are fighting for what happened during the protest. We are deprived of the necessary security, “he said.
According to motorcyclist Adeinka Omoh, police are watching when people are robbed.
He said, “Even if they rob you in front of the police, they will not answer if you call them. Hoodlums usually rob people on the bridge when traffic is heavy. Before starting work, they make sure that the other side of the road is free. They keep a motorcycle in the other free lane to make it easier for them to escape after the robberies.
“The bridge starts from Alaka to Apogbon. I don’t think the people they chased under the bridge are guilty. These notorious boys chose it as a permanent job. ”
State Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu, police said they were not aware of the attacks on the bridge.
According to him, construction work is underway at the end of the Eco Bridge, covering the areas of Costain, Alaka and Iponri.

“I have no complaints about it (incessant attacks). I have no complaints like you. But I know that I have placed my people on the Eco Bridge. “If there is any information, we will redouble our efforts to protect everyone.”
