Nigerian Senate Speaker Ahmed Lawan has finally spoken about the government’s recent closure of the microblogging site Twitter.
Lawan told reporters at the National Assembly in Abuja on Friday that Nigeria needs Twitter.
“The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammad, told the Nigerians that they were talking on Twitter to resolve this issue. Our belief is that Nigeria needs Twitter as much as Twitter needs Nigeria.
“We believe that the issue between Twitter and the Nigerian federal government will be resolved.
“But other than that, I’m optimistic, I believe we’ll all get our lessons,” he said.
Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammad said that Twitter has been suspended, saying that it threatens Nigeria’s corporate existence.
Twitter had previously deleted a comment by President Muhammadu Buhari referring to the 1967 civil war, which many Nigerians disliked.
