Former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said on Monday the PPP had rejected the government’s proposal to “delay” the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, as they could hurt Kashmir’s intentions.

The former Prime Minister, speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, said the PPP would not allow the government to steal what the people wanted.

“The PPP rejects the idea of delaying and disrupting elections.”

The PPP leader called on the AJK government not to ignore the Prime Minister’s statement and said the party had decided to “reject the government’s view of the AJK elections.”

Ashraf said transparent, fair and timely elections should take place in AJK, adding that the government will reap what it sows.

“The government is also undermining Kashmir’s intentions by implementing its policies,” Ashraf said.

The former Prime Minister questioned what the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) had written to write a letter to the government, requesting that the election be postponed.

Ashraf reminded the Prime Minister that he used to say that inflation is high, then the Prime Minister is to blame.

The entire country is reserved for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he said, adding that the government will work hard to provide relief to many people in the coming budget.

NCOC marks the suspension of AJK election

Yesterday, the NCOC recommended that the elections of Azad Jammu and Kashmir be postponed for two months.

In this regard, the NCOC has written a letter to the Chief Commissioner Commissioner of AJK, stating that due to the high number of coronavirus cases in the country, elections should be delayed.

The letter said that political rallies for elections would lead to the spread of the virus in the state, adding that the number of people with coronaviruses had already been eliminated.

The NCOC said millions of AJK citizens could be vaccinated by September 2021.

It should be noted that the AJK policy deadline will expire on July 29, but so far, the process for new elections has not been announced.

‘PTI seeks results in Azad Kashmir election’

Earlier, AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider criticized the PTI government for wanting to meet its demands for AJK elections.

Haider said if Imran Khan interfered in the election, AJK would forget all the honors

He also said that no matter what Prime Minister Imran Khan does, AJK will no longer be a member.

Haider added that he had received a letter from the NCOC suspending the election next month.

“Elections at AJK can only be postponed if there are external challenges,” said Prime Minister Farooq. “Such letters are an insult to Azad Kashmir voters. The powers that be are vested in the Azad Kashmir Parliament, however, this approach will create political problems in the state.”

A few days ago, Haider had stated that the Prime Minister of Pakistan “does not know that Azad Kashmir has his own electoral committee,” adding that “Prime Minister Imran Khan does not have the authority to install EVMs in Azad Kashmir.”

He further added that there was no need to suspend the by-elections as by-elections were also held in the country despite the epidemic.

“It is not possible to suspend elections in Azad Kashmir,” Haider said. “Azad Kashmir’s election was not answered in the Bani Gala locker room.”
