SINGAPORE: Five friends who clashed on Lim Chu Kang Road during the early hours of December 1, 2018 were jailed on Monday (May 31) and banned from driving.
Ian Goh Debao, 32, admitted a racing charge and drove dangerously on the Lim Chu Kang road to Jalan Bahar.
His friends – Daniel Chua Wei Chuan, 28, Daniel Lee Jie, 28, Hubert Choo, 27, and Samuel Low Shi Li, 27 – pleaded guilty to a race charge.
The five were jailed for a week, fined $ 1,500 and banned from driving for 18 months. Goh was fined an additional $ 2,500 for driving safely.
The court learned that the group had planned to go to prawns that night and agreed to meet at Lim Chu Kang Road.
There, they saw a gray Audi being driven several times along the stretch of road and this made them decide to compete in pairs.
As a starting point they fixed a spot near a bus stop and took care to avoid the quick camera on the stretch of road.
Deputy Prosecutor Kevin Ho said the first race involved Goh and Chua. Goh was driving a white BMW, while Chua was driving a blue Honda Civic.
After Chua blew his horn three times, both cars sped off. They drove in a straight line for about 1.5 km before making a U-turn to avoid the speed camera.
A report from the Health Sciences Authority found that Chua was driving at an average speed of 115 km / h, 45 km / h more than the speed limit, while Goh was driving at about 110 km / h.
The second race, with Goh and Lee, took place at 12:49 p.m. Lee blew his horn and the two cars ran down the same stretch. It was found that Goh was driving at about 96kmh, while Lee was averaging 85kmh. Both exceeded the speed limit of 70 km / h.
The next two races, with Choo and Low, took place in a similar way. Court documents said the speed at which they were traveling could not be estimated, as the cars were too small in the video made by a traffic police officer patrolling the area.
In convicting them, District Judge Lorraine Ho said they needed to be deterred, given the serious nature of the crimes. But he took into account the fact that no one was injured or that the property was damaged as a result of the illegal races and that all five had a clean driving history before the crimes.
