Michael Flynn says Myanmar-like coup ‘should happen’ in US

Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser in the Trump administration, appeared to be calling for a Burmese coup in the United States during a conference in Texas attended by many supporters of the QAnon conspiracy theory.

MarketWatch reports that Flynn made the remarks when speaking at the conference in Dallas titled “For God & and Country Patriot Roundup.” In a video shared online, someone in the audience asks Flynn, “I want to know why what happened in Myanmar can’t happen here.”

This question sparked cheers from the audience.

When the crowd calmed down, Flynn replied, “No reason. I mean, it should be here.”

In February, Myanmar’s military took power and overtook the country’s democratically elected government. Hundreds of Myanmar security forces have been killed since the coup and thousands of pro-democracy protesters have been arrested, according to the Association for Political Prisoners.

In December, after Biden was declared the winner of the presidential election, Flynn suggested that Trump use the military to “rerun” the 2020 election. During an appearance on conservative news channel Newsmax, Flynn suggested that Trump confiscate every voting machine in the country and send the military to swing states, where Biden won.

CNN notes that QAnon supporters are clearly excited about the idea that Trump will use the military to regain power in the US. Many believed that on inauguration day he would proclaim martial law to prevent Biden from taking office.

According to CNN, Flynn also falsely claimed at the Dallas event that “Trump won. He won the referendum and he won the electoral college election.” Since leaving the Trump administration, Flynn has become a major figure in the QAnon movement, posting content related to conspiracy theory on social media.
